Christina Mohil
Christina Mohil is a MERIT Hospice volunteer at Lexington Health Care in Orland.

Christina Mohil has a gift to contribute, and a conscience that tells her to give it as much as she can. Mohil has emphasized this spirit during her time volunteering at Lexington Health Care in Orland Park as a MERIT Hospice volunteer. All MERIT volunteers were honored with an appreciation dinner during National Volunteer Week, April 19-25.

Mohil's goals are simple, but very powerful when it comes to volunteering, which she has been actively participating in for the last year and a half.

"I think primarily making a difference in the lives of others and knowing that, in my life, I'm making an impact," she said.

These words depict Mohil's character and courage in taking on such a responsibility.

Volunteering is a way to give back and Mohil accentuates this simple philosophy, "I think all of us have gifts that we need to contribute throughout our lives because you can positively impact the lives of others with those gifts and I feel it is incumbent on me to use what I have."

After a couple of months, Mohil began to see the positive impact that she was having on the patients at Lexington.

Along with having a passion for volunteering, Mohil is also a eucharistic minister.

This has allowed Mohil to have a unique perspective when working with the individual patients at Lexington.

"It takes a special kind of strength to be able to visit the sick, in a way you are facing something that is inevitable, we all get sick and we need to depend on other people."

Though a native of Burr Ridge, Orland Park was her choice destination to volunteer.

"I was very familiar with the area, I really enjoy going to Lexington in Orland, and I know the staff," she said. "They're very friendly and that makes a big difference. Orland Park is a great community."

For Mohil, volunteering is important simply because she believes you have to give back to your community.

"I would say that you were put on this Earth for this purpose, that everybody has a duty to give back to their community," she said. "You can't just live for yourself ... life is about helping other people and the rewards are a thousand fold."
