LWW students recognized as Weekly Warriors
Lincoln-Way West High School's Pupil Personnel Services Department has recognized four students for its Weekly Warrior program.
The four students honored are: Samantha Lyons, Rebecca Pilipchuk, Jake Robbins and Darren Sanders.
Each week the PPS department asks for nominations of students who have displayed qualities from the Warrior Code such as wisdom, respect, courage and honor, according to Brian Mahoney, PPS director.
Teachers, staff members and administrators submit names of students and include what value the student demonstrated and what act they observed for the nomination. Each week, one student is chosen to represent the week's value.
Lyons was nominated for wisdom; Pilipchuk was nominated for respect; Robbins was nominated for courage and Sanders was nominated for honor.
Lyons offered to help make the library video for the school, and came in many times over the summer to help put the video together.
LW West Principal Dr. Monica Schmitt congratulated the students.
"These student leaders help demonstrate to our entire student body what it is to be a Lincoln-Way West Warrior," she said. "They are helping to set new traditions for our school, exemplifying wisdom, respect, courage and honor."
Warriors honor faculty
Seniors on Lincoln-Way West's varsity football team recognized their favorite faculty or staff member during the team's home football game against Stagg High School on Oct. 15.
The players gave their football jersey to a teacher to wear during the day, and the teacher was recognized at the varsity football.
Twenty-four seniors recognized faculty and staff members, who were: Jamie Ende, Elizabeth Pawlicki, Brain Miller, Heather Kunkel, Kristen Anderson, Lea Fortkamp, Michelle lack, Brittany Domzal, Dawn Kuchler, Michelle Wolski, Rachel Binneboese, Jason Van Swol, Mandy Chrisman, William Howard, Keith Huizinga, Brian Nowak, Barb Nolan, Martha Borchert, Renae Goldie, Rob Schiffbauer, Michelle Schiller, Cathy Taylor, Eric Olson and Dr. Monica Schmitt.
"This was a great night for Lincoln-Way West. The faculty recognition night is in appreciation of the positive impact the adults have made in the athletes' lives during their high school years," LWW Principal Dr. Monica Schmitt said.

LWC students honored with breakfast
Lincoln-Way Central honored its top academic students and provided information on college preparation on Sept. 29 at Breakfast with the Principal.
"Part of the Lincoln-Way District 210 initiative is to communicate with our public by bringing parents and community members into the schools to learn firsthand about the four Lincoln-Way high schools," Dr. Lawrence A. Wyllie, superintendent, told more than 185 parents at the event.
Every year, Lincoln-Way High School District 210 principals invite parents in the schools to meet with staff, hear current information about the district and school programs and have their questions answered.
Janet Reiss, Central college counselor, gave a presentation about the college admission process and how parents, teachers and school counselors can help students prepare for college. She outlined a four-year plan that each student is encouraged to participate in to ensure all high school and college entrance requirements are met.
The top 15 LWC sophomores are: Christina Alvarado, Natasha Bateman, Stephen Beck, Michael Dybala, Kelly Fleckenstein, Taylor Foytik, Hannah Gorecki, Danijela Jackovich, Matthew Mikolajczak, Stephen Papa, Amanda Peterson, Margaret Pluskota, Taylor Sabatini, Kaitlyn Siadek and Anna Yonkaitis.
The top 15 LWC juniors are: Kaleigh Barrett, Dariusz Blachowicz, Kara Boucher, Isaac Carrasquillo, Cara Champion, Dayna Demro, Charlene Dundek, Abigail Giovanazzi, Lauren Kelly, Caleb Nielsen, Lisa Peterson, Rachel Post, Brent Swanberg, Jacqueline Tanis and Brandon Torres.

Lewis University
NL student helps ROTC team place second, third
Lewis University students in the Army ROTC program placed second in the five-man team division and earned third place in the nine-man team division at the annual Brigade Ranger Challenge event, which was held Oct. 8-10 at Camp Marseilles, Ill. The team competed against 28 teams from Illinois and Indiana Air Force and Army ROTC. It was the best finish for Lewis University ROTC since it started competing as a Lewis University team in 2006.
The team practices for at least 2.5 hours a day while training for the competition, and is selected early in the semester. It trains rigorously nearly every morning of the week until the Brigade Ranger Challenge Competition at Camp Marseilles.
Members of the Lewis University ROTC Ranger Challenge team include: Cadet Dorian Oleksak of Romeoville (nine-man captain), Cadet Cody Curin of Burr Ridge, Cadet Matthew Blake of Geneva, Cadet Kyle McManaway, Cadet James Bilder of Palos Heights, Cadet Reinhardt VanWyk of Aurora, Cadet David Irvine of Willowbrook, Cadet Brian Marquez of Oak Park, Cadet Lukasz Kramarz of Hickory Hills, Cadet Steven Wynne of Joliet (five-man captain), Cadet Michael Hren of New Lenox, Cadet David Ortiz of Joliet, Cadet Jack Wood of Lemont and Cadet Alex Beltran of Chicago.
The Brigade Ranger Challenge Competition is a three-day event conducted on a non-tactical course. Teams participate in 10 graded events: The Army Physical Fitness Test, Day and Night Land Navigation, Obstacle Course, First Aid, Litter Carry, Weapons Assembly and Disassembly, One Rope Bridge, Grenade Assault Course and 10K Road Forced Foot March.
Noonan Academy
New Lenox resident Johan Widmann, a seventh-grader at Noonan Academy, took fourth place in mathematics on Oct. 2 at Providence Catholic's Tenth Annual Academic Bowl. About 250 seventh and eighth grade students, along with their families, attended the event. Students competed in several subject areas that included language arts, social science, science, mathematics and geography. Students earned personal scores in each subject area, which were tabulated and compared to students from other elementary schools at their same grade level, both as a team and individuals.
